How to customize the panel in KDE

When you log into a SuSE Linux system for the first time, you will note that the panel at the bottom of the screen is different than it was with RedHat Linux:

This document describes how to customize the panel to your own liking.

First, you may want to remove the YaST menu, since most of the menu items are for system administration. The menu has an icon of a hammer and a wrench. Right-click on it and choose Remove. Note that you can change the location of an icon on the panel by using Move from this menu.

Next, you can add program icons and menus by right-clicking an empty area of the panel and mousing to Add -> Button -> program or menu. For example, to add an icon for the Konqueror web browser, choose Add -> Button -> Internet -> Konqueror Web Browser.

Add Konqueror icon to the panel

Opera, Netscape, and Mozilla are other useful browsers. You can find the Netscape browser with Add -> Button -> SuSE -> Internet -> WWW -> Netscape Communicator.

You can add a menu of graphics programs with Add -> Button -> Graphics -> Add this menu.

Add graphics menu to the panel

You may want to replace the SuSE menu ("Start" menu on the lower left corner of the screen) with the Standard KDE menu, which you may be used to from the RedHat systems. Open the Control Center (from the SuSE menu or the YaST menu), click on Look & Feel, then click on Menu settings, then choose the Standard KDE menu radio button, click Apply, and close the Control Center.
