CABI servers and workstations can be accessed from the Internet. The CABI WWW server is located at http://claymore.rfmh.org and the CABI FTP server is at ftp://visitor@claymore.rfmh.org. FTP access is described below.
The only way to login to a Linux workstation in CABI is to first login to claymore using the Secure Shell (SSH) and then proceed to other machines using ssh. A secure shell client (a piece of software that makes the connection to claymore's ssh server possible) has to be installed on your outside machine. Many Linux distributions come with ssh clients; OpenSSH is common. Mac OS X comes with an ssh command in the Terminal. Many free ssh clients are available for Windows PCs and for Mac OS 9 and are listed the the OpenSSH website. SecureCRT is a good commercial ssh client for Windows-based PCs. An ssh client is also useful as a telnet program replacement since its terminal emulation is not broken (unlike the default W95/98/NT implementation). SSH service on claymore is configured using default port 22. We recommend choosing the blowfish cipher. Use nonpriviledged ports (the -P option in unix).
CABI maintains an FTP server at claymore.rfmh.org. The visitor account requires a password (the same as the CABI web site). In May 2005 we made changes to the FTP service, for example no /pub/incoming directory (user directories are available immediately upon logging in).
Data in the FTP area are stored temporarily only. Do not expect them to stay there for more than a day or so. Also keep in mind that maintaining data confidentiality is your responsibility. If you have any concerns, use jaz cartridges, CDs, or DVDs and not the rather weakly authenticated FTP access.
The easiest FTP access from Windows is probably achieved using a graphical FTP client such as FTPvoyager or WS-FTP. They can be used to both download and upload the data as well as to delete them. Such FTP clients often work very similarly to Windows Explorer including drag&drop and right-click menu functionality. In the address field, specify ftp://visitor@claymore.rfmh.org for the visitor access. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x and later can also be used and also supports drag&drop, although several users have encountered problems using it (for example trying to create subdirectories).
The Linux web browser Konqueror can be used as a graphical FTP client. Konqueror supports drag&drop. You can drag a file or folder to the file manager, the Desktop, or even a Konsole shell in later versions of the operating system. In the Location field in Konqueror type ftp://visitor@claymore.rfmh.org. If you don't know what Konqueror is just type Alt-F2 and type in the address and click Run. (Note: it doesn't work very well on SuSE 7.3, which is on some of our computers.)
As usual FTP can be run from the command line in Unix or Linux if you know the commands. If you've forgotten FTP client commands, see the Linux manpage ("man ftp") or press "?" for help once in FTP. For detailed steps on FTP-ing your MRI data from the Siemens console click here.
The Linux workstations also have FTP servers. They can be accessed only from within our firewall. Use your AFS username and password; you will be logged into your AFS home directory. These FTP servers do not allow data archiving or compression. The Linux workstation FTP servers are useful for transferring data from the Siemens console to your AFS directory, to the AFS temp space (a subdirectory of /afs/cabi/temp), or to local temp space /temp. (Note that /afs/cabi/temp and /temp are for temporary data only; don't expect the data to stay there long.)
