MEDx Frequently Asked Questions

The text below is identical (of course, if we updated it last time the FAQ changed) to the automatic reply a user gets after reporting a MEDx problem using this website.

1) How do I convert images to the Analyze format?
2) How to setup DICOM?
3) Inaccessible Images
4) Why is my folder corrupted?
5) v3.0 new features
6) v3.1 new features
----------------------------------------
1) How do I convert images to the Analyze format?
Single image or volume can be easily saved
in the Analyze (AVW) format from the menu
"Image->Save Image As...". Multiple volumes
can be saved (e.g., for subsequent Matlab
SPM processing) in this way:
* read all the volumes into MEDx,
* go to the group page where every volume
is represented by an icon,
* from menu "File->ImageScript Execution...",
select and run the script SaveAVW.tcl. The
script will prompt for a directory where the
AVW files should be stored and the file
prefix it should use. The prefix will be
concatenated with the 4 digit file number.
One *.img and one *.hdr file will be created
for every volume.

2) How to setup DICOM?
In MEDx menu, go to Setup->DICOM Defaults, then
fill in the following items:
* Remote Query/Retrieve Server *
- DICOM Application Entity Title: DICOMSERVER
- IP Address: 205.167.254.241
- Port: 2332
- Type of DICOM System: Default
Pres Add button, then fill in the rest:
* MEDx *
DICOM Application Entity Title: 2051672542423000
Port: 3000
Please specify a query/retrieve directory: <DIR>
Would you like ...: MEDx
Press the OK button.
Notes:
- supply a directory with reasonable amount
of space for <DIR>. The complete DICOM directory
tree containing the retrieved images will be
stored there.
- notice that the MEDx DICOM Application Entity
Title entry contains a number composed from
IP address and port number, with all separators
removed; the one above is for csf, when working
from sulcus, use 2051672542403000
----------------------------------------
3) Inaccessible Images
If you don't chose to save images locally in the
folder and the absolute path to any image changes
for any reason, MEDx will not be able to get
to that image any more. It uses absolute paths.
The only way to repair the damage is to restore
the original naming or creat a symbolic link.
----------------------------------------
4) Why is my folder corrupted?
Most likely because you attempted to change
something in it "manually" (e.g. by copying
files from UNIX command prompt, editing
parameter files with vi editor, and so on).
This can lead to MEDx folder corruption
and funny behavior, such as random image
orientation changes when zooming an image,
or wrong measurements being reported.
----------------------------------------
5) v3.0 new features
According to Sensor Systems, this new version includes
the full SPM96 module, an improved reader facility
and an expanded visualization package.
----------------------------------------
6) v3.1 new features
MEDx 3.1 is a limited maintenance release.
This version includes the ADW reader,
Interfile, new temporal filtering options,
and tissue segmentation within the SPM module.
A number of bug fixes is also included.
